Policing a revolutionary capital: Public order and population control in Nafplio (1824–1826)

Abstract In the new hierarchy of space created by Greek Revolution, Nafplio acquired a prominent position and soon replaced Tripolitsa as preeminent administrative center fledgling state. Declared law seat administration in September 1823, was stronghold during incessant infighting that characterized struggle for independence. From June 1824 (when its fortress handed over to government), served political military revolutionary territory. Administrative officials, politicians, primates, soldiers, an influx refugees thronged city, creating conditions overpopulation, at time when Ottoman–Egyptian commander Ibrahim Pasha advancing on rebel strongholds Peloponnese. Based voluminous archival records, this essay examines policing projects carried out authorities between 1825 1826 address public order security issues facing city.
